Which hardware do you need?

The right hardware depends on what you're connecting and how much load it needs to hold. Snap hooks and carabiners give you a quick-connect point, rings and D-rings are fixed attachment points, and buckles or tri-glides let you adjust a strap's length or fit. Use the table below to compare the main categories at a glance.

Category Used for Popular options
Snap hooks Connecting leads to collars and harnesses Bolt snaps, trigger snaps, swivel eye carabiners
Rings Attachment points for leads, harnesses and bags Welded D-rings, O-rings, square rings, halter rings
Buckles Adjusting and securing webbing straps Side release buckles, metal buckles, D-shackles
Tri-glides and stop rings Adjusting strap length Tri-glides, steg rings
Carabiners Quick-connect points for leads and keychains Swivel eye carabiners, stainless steel carabiners
BioThane adapters Connecting BioThane straps to standard hardware BioThane-compatible rings and snap hooks

Snap hooks

Our snap hooks range includes bolt snaps, trigger snaps and swivel eye carabiners in stainless steel and solid brass. Bolt snaps and trigger snaps are the standard choice for dog leads, while swivel eye versions add 360-degree rotation to prevent tangling.

Rings

Our rings range covers welded D-rings, O-rings, square rings and halter rings in steel, stainless steel and brass. Welded D-rings are the standard choice for attachment points on harnesses, collars and bags, as a welded join has no gap that can open under load.

Buckles

Our buckles range includes side release buckles, metal buckles and D-shackles in plastic and metal, in widths to match common webbing sizes from 15 to 50 mm. Side release buckles are the standard choice for adjustable straps, while metal buckles and D-shackles suit heavier-duty applications.

Tri-glides and stop rings

Our tri-glides and stop rings are used to adjust and lock the length of webbing or paracord straps. Tri-glides allow a strap to be threaded back through itself for adjustment, while steg rings hold a folded strap in place. Combine a tri-glide with a buckle on the same strap for a fully adjustable, secure fit, or with a BioThane adapter when working with BioThane straps.

Carabiners

Our carabiners range includes swivel eye and stainless steel carabiners in various sizes. These are widely used for keychains, dog leads and general-purpose quick-connect points. Breaking strength varies by size and material, so always check the specifications on the specific product page before choosing one for a load-bearing application.

BioThane adapters

Our BioThane adapters let you combine BioThane straps with standard hardware such as rings and snap hooks, using rivets or Chicago screws for a secure, permanent fixing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bolt snap and a trigger snap?

A bolt snap has a sliding bolt that you push back with your thumb to open the gate, and it springs shut when released. A trigger snap has a lever on the side that you squeeze to open the gate. Both are spring-loaded and widely used for dog leads, the main difference is the opening mechanism and which is easier to operate one-handed.

Which D-rings are best for a dog harness?

Welded D-rings in stainless steel or solid brass are the best choice for a dog harness, as the welded join has no gap that can open under repeated pulling. Choose a D-ring size that matches the width of your webbing or strap, and a thickness suited to the size and strength of the dog.

What size buckle fits my webbing?

Buckles are sized to match the inner width of the webbing or strap, commonly 15, 20, 25, 32 or 50 mm. Measure the width of your strap and choose a buckle with a matching feed-through size, since a buckle that's too narrow won't fit and one that's too wide will allow the strap to shift.

How do I attach a tri-glide to a strap?

To attach a tri-glide, fold the end of the webbing or paracord strap and feed it through the middle bar of the tri-glide, then back through one of the outer bars. This creates a loop that holds the tri-glide in place and lets you adjust the strap length by sliding it along the loop.

What hardware is compatible with BioThane straps?

BioThane straps work with the same rings, D-rings and snap hooks used for webbing, fitted using rivets or Chicago screws rather than stitching. Our BioThane adapters are designed specifically for this, giving a secure, permanent connection between the strap and the hardware.
