What Are Eyelets and Grommets

Eyelets and grommets are small metal fasteners designed to reinforce holes in materials that are exposed to tension or repeated use. Without reinforcement, holes in leather, webbing or fabric can easily stretch or tear. Installing an eyelet prevents this damage and creates a strong opening that stays intact even under load.

The terms eyelet and grommet are often used interchangeably. In some contexts they are also described as hollow rivets because the hollow shaft expands when pressed with a setting tool. This expansion locks the eyelet firmly into the material and distributes pressure evenly around the hole.

Common Uses for Eyelets

Metal eyelets and grommets are used in a wide range of DIY, craft and technical applications. They are especially popular in leatherworking, outdoor gear and paracord projects where strong attachment points are required.

Typical uses include reinforcing holes in backpacks, belts, tarps, dog collars, harnesses and custom outdoor equipment. They are also commonly used when cord, rope or webbing needs to pass through a material without causing wear or damage.

Installing Eyelets and Grommets

Installing an eyelet is straightforward when using the correct tools. First a hole is punched into the material using a leather punch or rotary punch. The eyelet is then placed through the hole and secured using a setter or press tool.

When pressure is applied, the hollow shaft spreads out on the back side of the material. This creates a permanent and secure connection that reinforces the hole and prevents tearing.
